Mercedes Clemens of Damascus, MD, is a certified massage therapist who has been denied to right to work with her favorite patients - horses. Animal massage practices are regulated by the state, and the state of Maryland recently ordered Clemens to close down her equine massage service, saying that horses can only be treated by certified veterinarians. Clemens is not seeking any kind of compensation, simply the right to practice the craft she loves. Animal massage has become a more popular practice in recent years, sparking public interest in state regulations of this alternative treatment.
