The Government Accountability Office investigated herbal supplement labels, finding that many made claims that were unfounded by scientific studies.
In operations were government agents posed as possible consumers to telephone salespeople, some found that large suppliers of simple herbal supplements such as ginseng and garlic would make claims that these herbal packages would replace prescription medication and would even cure diseases such as cancer. In one such scenario, the federal agent was told that aspirin and ginkgo biloba were safe to take together, despite FDA warnings of possible internal bleeding.
The findings showed that 16 of 40 popular supplements exceeded FDA limits on amounts of pesticides allowed in products. However, the FDA does not advise herbal supplements, making their sale legal although possibly dangerous.
