Study: Beer Increases Risk of Psoriasis in Women

August 20th, 2010 · No Comments

A new study finds that drinking beer increases the risk of psoriasis in women.

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, 2.5 percent of Caucasians and 1.3 percent of African-Americans have the disease. Doctors are not sure what causes psoriasis but believe that something triggers the immune system, setting off a chain reaction that causes skin cells to reproduce too quickly.

The new study, published by Harvard Medical School, looked at women between 27 and 44 years-old who were asked multiple questions every two years. The questions included the amount and type of alcohol they consumed, and whether they had developed psoriasis. Of the 82,000 women in the study 1,150 reported diagnoses. Researchers used 1,069 of those subjects and determined that women who reported averaging at least 2.3 drinks per week had a 72 percent greater risk of psoriasis than women who did not drink.

The study did not find any correlation between psoriasis and light beer, red wine, white wine or liquor.
