FDA to improve sunscreen labels

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration plans to change sunscreen labels to include a ranking of ultraviolet-A ray protection.Ultraviolet-B rays are what cause sunburn, and currently the SPF ratings on sunscreen products refers to protection against UVB rays. Ultraviolet-A rays are what cause skin damage like wrinkles, or even cancer. Currently, sunscreen products have no standard UVA rating, so consumers are not sure how much protection they are getting from long-term skin damage.The FDA is expected to implement a standard UVA ray rating system on sunscreen products this fall. Acne Myths

Acne is a red, irritating skin rash that primarily affects teenagers and young adults, but it can occur at all ages. Acne typically appears on the oil producing areas of the body, such as the face, chest, and back. Acne can also occur on the neck and upper arms.

There are several popular myths that exist about acne. A common misconception is that acne is the result of uncleanliness or infrequent washing. Acne does not, however, result from too much dirt on the skin or in the pores, and excessive scrubbing can actually make acne symptoms worse.

An older acne myth is that symptoms are linked to a poor diet, and greasy or unhealthy foods can cause acne. This, of course, is not true. Acne has nothing to do with a persons diet.

Acne is most commonly caused by abnormal flaking of cells inside the hair follicle that leads to the formation of a plug which can enlarge or even rupture inside the hair follicle.

Explaining Warts

When a skin wart appears, it may seem as though it came out of nowhere, but common warts are actually a sign of an infection.

Warts are actually an infection in the top layer of skin, caused by viruses in the human papillomavirus family. When a virus infiltrates the outer layer of skin, usually through a small scratch, it causes rapid growth of cells on the outer layer of skin, which creates the wart.

Scientists have identified more than 100 unique types of the human papillomavirus. Most people will have at least one common wart at some point in their lives, most likely on their hands. Certain forms of the virus are more likely to infect skin on the hands.

Warts are contracted from other people with warts, and the virus can stay dormant for months, or even years.

The Truth About Sunscreen

While most sunscreens help prevent sunburn, many do not provide effective protection against skin damage from ultraviolet A rays, which make up 95 percent of the UV spectrum.

Sunburn is caused by ultraviolet B rays, which are strong at midday and in the summer. Ultraviolet A rays, however, can penetrate glass and are the same strength all year. Both types of rays contribute to wrinkling, freckling, hyper-pigmentation and skin cancer.

The United States Food and Drug Administration has been promising to set sunscreen performance standards for over 30 years but has yet to do it. For sunscreen to be effective in preventing skin cancer it must provide broad-spectrum UV coverage. Dr. Henry Lim, chairman of dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit said “The U.S. is the only industrialized country with no guidelines for UVA protection, so consumers here have no way of knowing.”
